Sensex opens strong in 2005

Tuesday, January 2, 2007 (Mumbai):The markets ended firm on the first trading day of 2007 with the benchmark index surging 155 points to close at Rs 13,942 levels.In the broader markets, the Nifty moved up a per cent or 41 points to end the day at 4007 levels."There will be selective picks among the large-caps besides the mid-cap basket. Mid-cap technology and media sector stocks should do well in 2007," said CK Narayan, ICICI Securities."We are seeing markets being pleasantly up. The trend will continue and there will be new money coming into the markets," added Pashupati Advani, Director, Advani OTC Dealers.Satyam Computer, which zoomed five per cent or Rs 24, was the biggest gainer among the BSE 30 scrips.Bajaj Auto, Maruti Udyog, Tata Motors, Hero Honda, TCS, Hindalco, Gujarat Ambuja Cements, Ranbaxy and Grasim Industries also closed in the green.However, Tata Steel, Dr Reddy's, HDFC, Reliance Communication, HDFC Bank and HLL closed in the red.All round strengthAll sectoral indices closed in positive turf on the first session of 2007. The BSE auto index was the top gainer that surged 3.2 per cent or 177 points.Mahindra & Mahindra (up 5.6 per cent), Tata Motors (up 3.3 per cent), Hero Honda (up 2.9 per cent), Hindustan Motors (up 1.9 per cent), Ashok Leyland (up 1.7 per cent), Cummins India (up 1.7 per cent) and Escorts Ltd (up 1.3 per cent) logged smart gains besides Bajaj Auto and Maruti Udyog.In the technology pack, TCS, Infosys Technologies, Moser Baer, Wipro Ltd, I-flex Solutions and HCL Infosystems also firmed up by close.Aban Loyd was the front-runner among capital goods stocks. It surged 18.3 per cent or Rs 253. Praj Industries, BEML, Carborundum Universal, KEC Infrastructure, Crompton Greaves, Siemens India and Gammons India were the other key gainers.On firm foundationStrength was also visible in select cement counters. JK Cements at Rs 184 levels firmed up over four per cent. Ultratech Cemco, Mangalam Cement, Prism Cement, Shree Cements, India Cements, Gujarat Ambuja Cements and ACC ended in positive territory.Maharashtra Seamless, JSW Steel, Hindalco, SAIL, Sterlite Industries, Sesa Goa, Hindustan Zinc and Jindal Saw were some of the key gainers in they metal space.
